This limited release (fewer than 700 bottles!) of O'Fallon Barrel-Aged Imperial Pumpkin was produced in collaboration with Schnuck Markets. We aged a small amount of our pumpkin-infused 10% ABV Wheatwine in Crown Royal barrels for over a year. With an IBU of 50, this beautiful amber brew is smooth, rich and creamy, subtly showcasing the warm spices and Madagascar Vanilla. Available only at Schnucks!
Aroma - Strong bourbon and vanilla dominate the first whiff. When you dive back in for more, toffee, brown sugar and caramel come out next. Stick your nose in long enough and you will get the pumpkin spices from the beer but they're subtle yet they do a great job of adding to the level of complexity.
Appearance - The beer pours a medium-deep brown with a soft, khaki head that starts small but dense and stays that way the entire time you drink it.
Flavor - Insanely smooth caramel and whiskey mix together amazingly. The sweetness from the malts are tamed nicely by the stiff bourbon character that is not at all overwhelming. The aroma sets up the flavor nicely as the order you notice things in the aroma is exactly how the flavor plays out. The vanilla is the one piece that is just a bit more subtle here but it's still very perceptible. The pumpkin spices do make an impact but again, it's at the end of each sip and doesn't over complicate the beer.
Mouthfeel - The body is full and the carbonation is below medium. This beer is chewy, yet the carbonation is at just the right level to make sure the beer doesn't stick around on your tongue.
Overall Impression - O'Fallon has bee doing some great things lately and while some of it has flown under the radar, this may be the beer that puts them in the spotlight. It's a phenomenal beer for those that love pumpkin beers. It's a phenomenal beer for those that DON'T love pumpkin beers. It's just a phenomenal beer. The barrel character added so much while still letting the spirit of the original beer shine through. We reviewed the regular Imperial Pumpkin recently (read that here) and that one scored quite well as a Wheatwine. While the pumpkin spices may be more mellow in this one compared to the original, this BA version took it to the next level and will make a lot of people very happy.
