Best Quote During Tasting
I like soft tacos because I can close the top and not turn my head to eat it.
Isn't that just a burrito?
Aroma - I literally said "Whoa!" when I took my first sniff. Big oak and caramel right up front, molasses and bourbon follow right behind with vinous, dark cherries coming at the end.
Appearance - Pours a clear, deep amber with a thin tan foam that leaves immediately.
Flavor - Very rich flavors of cherries, oak, bourbon, caramel and molasses all hit with equal intensity. The aroma and flavors are a good match. There is alcohol that is definitely present but it's not "hot." It's got equal parts wine and bourbon that are supporting players for a great base beer.
Mouthfeel - Medium+ carbonation with a medium-full body and a semi-dry finish.
Overall Impression - This beer is STRONG. The aroma smacks you in the face and the flavor puts hair on your chest (sorry ladies). The oak is definitely present but it's not overwhelming which makes it support, not overtake the great flavors that were pulled from the wood barrels this beer was aged in. It'd be unfair to compare to previous Wolpertinger batches since this is completely different, but I'd say that the 2017 version has its work cut out.
Aroma - Plenty of oak and bourbon on the nose of this one. Very pleasant sweetness from the malt produces a mix of toffee and caramel that melds nicely with the boozy and oak aromas.
Appearance - Deep amber with a thin beige head that disappears quite quickly.
Flavor - It's a bit more malt and fruit forward compared to the aroma. Dark fruits, cherries, red wine, and caramel all shine through. Following them up is the warm booziness from the bourbon and oak.
Mouthfeel - Medium body with medium carbonation.
Overall Impression - This was honestly one of the best Wolpertinger beers Urban Chestnut has done. I thought last year's iteration was a bit lacking when compared to previous years. It's great to see Urban Chestnut stepping it back up this year.
