How do you know what cat pee tastes like?
Justin:
Aroma - Verges on sweet but it's hard to get past the hops. Grapefruit (the fruit and the citusy hop aroma) and floral hops dominate with the slightest bit of sweet malt underneath. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Cloudy gold, with a thin off-white head that quickly becomes to a thin film. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - The light malt flavors actually come through nearly equally to the hops. White bread and wheat bread on the malt and the hops come across as resiny more than grapefruit. Sweetness is subtle but unmistakably fruity. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium+ carbonation, medium body and a semi-dry finish. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - It's too easy to make the comparison so I will: It's not in the same league as Grapefruit Sculpin. I'm not sure that it was brewed because it wanted to compete GS but with the beers both hitting the STL market around the same time, it's impossible not to mention them in the same breath. With all that being said, I want to definitively point out that I liked the beer (I was at 3.7 out of 5 compared to 3.65 on Untappd, 3.52 on Ratebeer and 3.99 on Beer Advocate so, I'm right on point with public opinion) and I'd be willing to recommend it to folks if they asked if they should try it. |

Blake:
Aroma - Lots of grapefruit, but leans more towards cloying than juicy. There is plenty of aroma from the hops that add a bit of floral character to the nose as well. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Hazy dark gold with a slightly off-white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Tropical in flavor, mainly grapefruit (duh). Slight breadiness from the malt, and grassy/floral hop flavor. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - Light-medium body with medium carbonation. Clean, semi-dry finish. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - My wife is trying to get into IPAs, and she seemed to really enjoy this one. It isn't nearly as dank as some of the other IPAs she tried, and had plenty of grapefruit for her to have something to latch onto. I liked the beer, but didn't love it. I'll likely still have it on many occasions in the future. If you want a slightly fruited IPA, this is worth the pickup. |
