If you let one customer buy every bottle of a limited release, you're a terrible bottle shop.
Justin:
Aroma - Citrus hops come across nicely on the nose with grapefruit and orange zest leading the way. There is a burnt rubber smell from the hops that is also resinous and complex. The malts are pie crust and wheat bread and while they're not huge, they are easy to find. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - The head is bright white and made up of small, tight bubbles. It pours out as a finger high and goes to half that height but no smaller as you drink it. The color is a slightly hazy gold. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - The hops are damn big in this one. It's juicy, earthy and resinous with a nice pine too (basically every American hop quality). If a pine tree could bear a grapefruit that was full of THC, that's what they used in this beer. The malts are sweet enough to balance all of that out with wheat bread and bread crust as the main flavors they produce. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - The carbonation and body are both medium for a nearly fluffy mouthfeel. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - Aside from the mouthfeel (which was still quite nice, mind you) this beer was a homerun. The blend of hops was outstanding and made this one extremely drinkable. The hops added a lot of flavor but the bitterness was kept under control by the semi-sweet malts. As a local only release, this is just another example of how we get spoiled here in STL. |

Blake:
Aroma - A nice mix of floral and citrus hops. The citrus mainly comes across as grapefruit, and verges more on the tropical side rather than bitter. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Expo IPA pours a beautiful gold color with a bit of haze and a fluffy white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Some really great hop character in Expo IPA. Plenty of that pine and resin that is so popular these days, but still lots of citrus to really bring out a great balance. The malt backbone is really great with bread and pie crust coming through after the hops do their work. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - The body is medium, same with the carbonation. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - Schlafly has really been killing it lately. I'm not sure they get enough respect in the St. Louis beer drinking community. They've been around so long now that people forget they make some really great craft beers. These days they are starting to push some boundaries again, and hopefully you all aren't missing out. |
