I'm not saying you can't think Star Wars is bad. I'm just saying that if you think that, you're a bad person who can stay out of my life. That's all.
Justin:
Aroma - The bourbon is apparent from a distance. Quite a bit of oak, some chocolate, a lot of caramel (almost maple syrup) with a smidge of vanilla. Very reminiscent of Bourbon County Stout in the aroma alone. |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - A thick black beer with a golden-brown head that stays afloat throughout the drinking experience. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - At 11%, it's hard to find the alcohol in this one. So much caramel and chocolate to accompany the oaky, vanilla booziness, the balance is incredible. While the sweetness is abundant, it's not over the top. |
Score: 18/20 |
Mouthfeel - Velvety smooth with low carbonation. A very full body with a clean, sweet finish. This is what every RIS should try to aspire to. |
Score: 5/5 |
Overall Impression - Looking back, I should've bought all 4 on the shelf. At $15/bottle, it's a bargain. I would love to have a few of these on hand to just surprise people with at bottle shares. This is a phenomenal example of the style and the idea that you can just buy this on the shelf on a random Chicago Wednesday kinda infuriates me. If you see it on the shelf, buy them all then email me (justin@saintbrewis.com). I'll help you figure out how to store them properly in my fridge. |

Blake:
Aroma - It's very oak-aged bourbon forward, with notes of chocolate and vanilla. Like Justin I picked up something similar to maple syrup in there as well. |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - Dark as the heart of Darth Sidious. A thick tan head sits atop the beer and leaves some nice lacing. The beer also has great legs. Very thick looking beer. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Lots of bourbon, but without a lot of the alcohol burn you'd expect from the flavor. Oak, vanilla, chocolate, and dark roast coffee are all there. It's a near perfect blend of flavors. |
Score: 19/20 |
Mouthfeel - Not as thick as Bourbon County Stout, but still very thick. Low carbonation with a slight syrup quality. Sweet finish completes an excellent mouthfeel. |
Score: 5/5 |
Overall Impression - Can you feel it? There has been an awakening. Oh sorry, stuck in Star Wars mode after leaving the theater from The Force Awakens. This was pretty much the perfect lead off beer to seeing the new movie tonight. I'll likely be finding a way to get more for a geek/nerd night, which may not be much different than any other night to be honest. |
Score: 9/10 |
