Best Quote During Tasting
It's so dark it's like…..liquid poop…but in a good way!
Justin:
Aroma - Dark fruits, sweet malts with a small amount of chocolate. Coffee is there but it's not as upfront. |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - Pours thick and black. The head has tight, tiny bubbles that are a chestnut brown. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - It's actually quite boozy. Much like in the aroma, the coffee is a little less than I was expecting. There is some vanilla and chocolate that play very well together. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - Low carbonation, medium+ body. |
Score: 5/5 |
Overall Impression - My friend Matt was quite excited when he found out that this beer would be at the review tasting he was invited to. He had been wanting to try this for quite a while and if you could've made love to this beer, he would have. To be honest, I'm not so certain he didn't try to when nobody was looking. For me, it was a great beer but one that I wouldn't go out of my way to get. Throw in a little more coffee, though, and I might be sold. That's where this one lacked in my opinion. |

Blake:
Aroma - Very rich smelling chocolate with a bit of plum and raisin. Nice bit of coffee that turns a beer that could be too sweet into bittersweet. |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - Pours thick like motor oil, and just as black. Thin khaki and cream colored head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Very chocolaty. Tastes like melted baker's chocolate has been added to a well made stout. There are nice hints of coffee and vanilla as well. A bit of alcohol is present, but just enough to provide some warmth to the beer. |
Score: 18/20 |
Mouthfeel - Thick, sweet, and slick. Very sweet finish with low carbonation. |
Score: 5/5 |
Overall Impression - Pipeworks is yet another brewery in Chicago that is worth the drive up north. I'd like to get my hands on all the Abduction series to do a side-by-side for science...yeah, science. If you are able to get a bottle or two of this and are a big fan of rich imperial stouts, don't pass it up! |
