Justin:
Aroma - Deep bread crust, toast, toffee, caramel and nut aromas come wafting out of your glass. It's actually quite complex and the more it warms up, the more that deep bread crust and nut character comes out. It's also got an overall rich and slightly sweet character to it. |
Appearance - The beer pours a crystal clear deep amber with thin but dense off-white head that lingers. |
Flavor - The beer is intensely dark in flavor with some big roasted notes and chocolate mixing nicely. The nuttiness is subdued compared to how it was in the aroma but it's still present, and the same can be said of the toffee and caramel. The hops are woody and earthy and while they are subtle, they balance the beer well. There's also just a hint of coffee that is perceptible on the back of your tongue as the beer finishes dry. |
Mouthfeel - The body is medium and the carbonation is medium+. The beer is a little lighter and brighter on your tongue than you'd expect considering its big, malty aroma and flavor. |
Overall Impression - Now this is worthy of being in a winter variety pack. It's just under 5% so it's not gonna keep you warm by the fire but it sure will taste good while you sit by one. It's a big, roasty, malty beer without being too heavy and it smells damn good to boot. We really like what O'Fallon has been up to lately and if they keep coming up with solid beers like this, hopefully the rest of you folks out there will too. |
