I'm gonna day drink on the pirate ship for sure.
Justin:
Aroma - Dark chocolate and dark fruits collide with neither coming across as a clear winner. There's a slight nuttiness there as well. The dark fruits (plums mostly) are present and it's sweet but not overly so. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Such sticky lacing. It's an opaque black with a HUGE tan head made up of tiny bubbles. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - There's some nice oak that I didn't get on the nose that's quite big. The brandy is very present and isn't too "hot" but makes its alcohol presence known. There's chocolate, dark fruits and that same slight nuttiness which all work well together for the balance. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is medium and the body is also medium. Overall, it's creamy and velvety and goes down smooth. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - The brandy barrels really helped step this one up a notch. The dark fruit character and I can only assume that nuttiness were brought out quite nicely in the beer. The oak in the flavor was a welcome surprise and helped add another layer of complexity to the rich beer. I prefer this one over the whiskey barreled version but would drink either one of them again if given the opportunity. |
Score: 9/10 |
Blake:
Aroma - Plenty of barrel character comes right through with a bit of brandy and oak. Rich notes of dark chocolate, roasted malts, and some dark fruits are also present. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Inky black with a dark mocha head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - The barrel character comes out even more in the flavor with a fair amount of brandy thrown in there that really brings out the best of the dark fruit flavors coming through. Adding in the dark chocolate and a bit of roast coffee gives Sexy Betty a very rich and complex flavor. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Could use a bit more thickness. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - I preferred Sexy Betty to Black Betty, but there wasn't a huge distinction. The brandy barrel made this one a bit more unique, and left me wanting to try a bit more. I'd pick this one up for sure if I saw it again. |
Score: 9/10 |
