"Copious" vanilla....I think that's a lot.
Justin:
Aroma - Equal parts milk chocolate and chocolate powder mix nicely with bourbon and subtle cherry. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Pours deep brown with a huge tan head made up of small and large bubbles. Great lacing. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Cherry and bourbon right up front. There's quite a bit of alcohol and it brings a sharp alcohol bite. There's some nice vanilla and subtle chocolate. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation, medium body and a clean finish. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - I'll admit I bought this because of the label. Needed to see if this beer was about the gimicky name or the product in the bottle. It had a lot of alcohol but it wasn't because of the bourbon, it was the ABV on its own. Regardless, I'm glad I snagged this one when visiting TX. |

Blake:
Aroma - There is a fair amount of oak character here, producing some nice vanilla flavors that mesh well with the chocolate and slight roast from the malts. A bit of alcohol is present, but not overwhelming. There is a slight sourness to the beer that throws off the aroma for me a bit. |
Score: 8/12 |
Appearance - It's a great looking beer, deep dark brown with a nice tan head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - That yeasty sourness is back in the flavor, but it's quickly killed off by the more pleasant aromas of vanilla, cocoa, and dark fruits. There is a heavy presence of alcohol, but I'm not really getting bourbon from it, just more of an astringent alcohol flavor. |
Score: 14/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium body with medium carbonation. Smooth with a semi-dry finish. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - It certainly wasn't a bad beer, but it did leave a little something to be desired. Just a few off flavors and a slight sharp edge to the alcohol cut into some other really great flavors and aromas. The more academic side of me would like to try a few different bottles just to see if I get any of that sourness or if it was just our bottle. |
