Justin:
Aroma - There is some awesome blueberry, grapefruit, orange zest and even some brief spiciness. Beneath that, there are some nice floral notes as well. I wish I could comment on the malts but the aroma is all hops. |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - The beer pours a cloudy pale gold with a tightly bubbled, frothy white head. Typically a cloudy beer wouldn't be ideal but based on the style, its cloudiness is appropriate. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - The hops are huge. So big. It's got big fruit, big berry, big everything. The same pieces of the aroma are here in the flavor with blueberry leading the way. I'm even getting a little bit of bubblegum in the mix as well. The typical IPA bitterness is there but it's surprisingly low. The malts do their part in balancing the beer but other than some pie crust character, there isn't much flavor from them. |
Score: 18/20 |
Mouthfeel - The body is full and the carbonation is medium+. It's very nice on the tongue and it's incredibly easy to drink. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - The hype is real. There isn't another brewery in the area doing this style of IPA and beyond that, Narrow Gauge does it really, really well. I'm not going to say it's better than the beers New England beers that it was modeled after but it sure will give them a run for their money. The balance was awesome even though the hops were VERY big and that's not an easy thing to do. |
Score: 9/10 |
