I like making beer friends.
Justin:
Aroma - A little bready sweetness from the malt, with some spiciness, almost like white pepper, from the yeast. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - The beer pours clear with a dense, white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - The thing you get most is how sweet the beer is. It's not cloying but it's much sweeter than I expected for the style. No tartness you'd expect from a saison. |
Score: 13/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium-high carbonation with semi-dry finish |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - So, this one had me scratching my head. The scores don't reflect that I really did enjoy the beer. The issue was that I found it to be a little too sweet without enough tartness to be a commercial example of the style. While this is a well-made beer that is sure to introduce a lot of people to the saison style, I feel it was missing some key components to give it a higher score. |
Score: 8/10 |
Blake:
Aroma - Earthy and spicy character, presumably from the Belgian yeast. Sweetness from the malt. I would've expected some tartness on the nose from a saison, but not getting any of that. |
Score: 8/12 |
Appearance - Golden honey colored, clear, with a thick white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - It isn't an unpleasant tasting beer, but it doesn't taste like a saison. There are a lot of bready notes, and a lot of sweet from the malt backbone. There is a bit of spicy character, but I want at least a bit of tartness from my saisons. |
Score: 13/20 |
Mouthfeel - Silky body, with a bit of a dry finish. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - I'm a huge fan of Mother's Brewing, but this doesn't really match the style presented, and doesn't innovate enough to make me care. It's still a solid beer, but gets lower scores because of not really hitting the notes in the style. |
Score: 7/10 |
