Dark Matter is dosed up with wheat malt to give it a smooth, subtle breadiness and extra body. Dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavors meld like thermonuclear plasma. We enjoy drinking Dark Matter while eating brownies, cranking M. Monoceros on the stereo, and thinking about portals.
Pairs well with candy bars, pudding and peanut butter cookies. Smoke a brisket and pour a Dark Matter, victory!
Aroma - Chocolate, caramel and...white bread? The amount of wheat in this beer is very present which is quite interesting and something you don't often see in a beer like this. The caramel notes were also unexpected in the levels they were present and the white bread is crazy to get in such a dark beer. There are no real hops and right at the end, you get some subtle coffee.
Appearance - Dark Matter is a very deep amber beer that comes with a tightly bubbled tan head that doesn't leave. The foam sticks to the side of your glass leaving nice lacing as the level of liquid diminishes with each sip.
Flavor - There are some caramel and chocolate notes that you can pick up first and it's noticeably sweet. It's not overly sweet, it's just got a sweetness to it that isn't off-putting but welcome. The other thing you can get is that there is just a bit of alcohol which at 6.6% was not necessarily unexpected but not anticipated either. Then there's that white bread flavor from the wheat that again shows itself which completely messes with your head because of the color of the beer.
Mouthfeel - The body is full and the carbonation is just above medium. This one coats your tongue and is soft and smooth. It's quite drinkable and isn't filling.
Overall Impression - We know, we know. Dark Matter has been in bombers for a while now. This one is a pre-release for two reasons. The first reason is that most folks haven't had the opportunity to try Dark Matter just yet since they've only been in St. Louis for 5 months or so and some people have a weird thing about buying bombers. The second reason is that IT'S MAKING IT'S CANNED DEBUT ON FRIDAY! Logboat has a lot up its sleeve when it comes to their upcoming canned offerings and that means great things for us consumers. Not only do we get more of their current beers in more portable form but they'll be giving us a lot more new beers to go in them as well. If you haven't had your first Dark Matter yet, Friday is a great time to make that happen.
