Justin:
Aroma - Dark fruits, raisins, chocolate with a little roastiness. |
Score: 8/12 |
Appearance - Very dark with ruby highlights. Tan head went away quickly. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - You get roasted flavors up front but they're not overpowering, more of a light roast. I doubt they used smoked malts but I'm getting some light smokiness and chocolate. It's rather spicy (hop spice, not heat spice) which was unexpected and it was bitter from the dark malts. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - Light in body and the carbonation is medium. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - The bitterness was a little bit much but overall I enjoyed the beer. Schwarzbier isn't a style that a lot of breweries do in general, let alone locally. This take on the beer may not be exactly "to style" but it's worth trying if you haven't had a Schwarz before. |

Blake:
Aroma - Some slight sweetness, chocolate, raisins, and a bit of roast. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Pours dark with a tan head. Dark amber color when held to the light. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Light roastiness, oatmeal, chocolate, and like Justin I got a bit of smoke. Slight bitterness is there, but overall there isn't a huge presence from the hops. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - Light body with medium carbonation. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - This beer was pleasantly surprising. Likely my favorite beer to come from Kirkwood Station. It'd be a great beer if you want something with flavors of a heavier dark beer, but need something a bit more sessionable. It's still a lager, so don't expect a hefty mouthfeel that matches the flavors. |
