I do it for the merit badges.
Justin:
Aroma - I definitely get cinnamon and some roast/chocolate notes. But for the love of god, I somehow am getting the aroma of black olives. |
Score: 7/12 |
Appearance - Black and opaque with a thin, tan head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - It's got a roasty flavor in general from the dark notest. The biggest thing is that the beer is quite spicy. I love hot stuff but for a drink, this is a step above appropriate spiciness. There are flavors of chocolate (duh), but that just makes it taste like I ate a pepper Hershey's bar. I can't say it's bad, though. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - A little thin for the style. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - This beer won the gold medal in its category in 2011. There's no doubt it's a great beer. There's also no doubt that since it comes in a bomber, you need to make sure it's your last beer of the night, your only beer of the night, or split it with a friend. The spiciness was just over the top for me. |

Blake:
Aroma - Chocolate, roasted coffee, cinnamon, and a bit of spicy heat. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Dark as night, and a nice tan head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - It starts out much like a regular chocolate spice, then you get just a bit of cinnamon before, POW, the heat kicks in. The kind of heat this beer brings is not too far off from what you get after eating a plate of hot wings. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - One of the only downfalls for me of this beer is that I wish it had a bit thicker mouthfeel. It's a common complaint from me when beers have so many rich flavors. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - I really can't say enough good things about this brewery. It was the first brewery stop of my bachelor party back in September. They had some truly unique beers on tap, and to top it all off the people who worked there were fantastic. Their beers feature some pretty fantastic artwork. To top it all of they have an awesome dog on premise. If you are in Denver make sure to stop by and give Charlie a nice head scratch for me. |
