If one of your first 5 CDs wasn't "Jagged Little Pill" you didn't grow up in the 90's.
Justin:
Aroma - The initial sniff brings sulfur and lemon with very light bread notes. It's like the dead middle of white bread. There's a wheat-like sweetness, not a fruity sweetness there was well. There's no orange to be found although it's listed as an ingredient and the coriander only shows up as slightly spicy. |
Score: 8/12 |
Appearance - This one pours a crystal clear straw color with a very thin, white head that never fully forms. Reminiscent almost of a Riesling. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - The orange and coriander show up bigger in the flavor than the aroma. The spice that the coriander brings is very present but not overwhelming. The malts are quite sweet so they balance the spice well and are bread dough and white bread. |
Score: 15/20 |
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is quite high and the body is just below medium for a crisp, dry finish. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - I really like the idea of this one but by going for two styles, I think it missed the mark on both. For having oats in it, the body was thin and for having coriander and orange, they were missing more than would've been appreciated. With ALL THAT being said, I still say it's a crowd-pleasing summer beer that'll work well on a hot day. |

Blake:
Aroma - The wheat comes across as bread dough with just a bit of sulphur in the mix as well. There is some light citrus and spice. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Pale yellow with decent clarity and a thin white head that disappears quickly. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - The grain and wheat flavors are very strong, and almost manage to overwhelm the citrus from the orange, and the sweet spice of coriander. |
Score: 14/20 |
Mouthfeel - Body on this one is on the upper end of thin, but held afloat by a high level of carbonation. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - Half-Wit Wheat is one of their older offerings, but it seems to be missing the bar when compared to Schlafly and Boulevard's wheat offerings. It's a good beer, but it's a style that has so much market saturation, and not a huge amount of differentiation between the beers. I love Charleville, and I'll likely have some at their brewery and winery this summer. If you are a wheat beer fan, you'll likely really enjoy this one. |
