Best Quote During Tasting
I'm not proud of how much I drank that night, but it IS the stuff legends are made of.
Aroma - A very clean yeast allows the hops and malts to shine. Hops are spicy and earthy while the malts are caramel and slightly roasty.
Appearance - The beer pours a deep brown, verging on black, with ruby highlights when tilted. A thick, tan head made of tightly compacted bubbles lingers on top of the beer and leaves lacing with each sip.
Flavor - Again, the yeast is very clean so the hops and malts steal the show. There are some dark fruit notes of raisin that mix well with the same spicy hops that I got in the aroma. There is also some graininess and caramel sweetness that accompany the mild roasted and toasted flavors.
Mouthfeel - Semi-dry finish with medium carbonation and a medium body. Crisp and well attenuated.
Overall Impression - Well whaddya know...another Bur Oak beer that was impressive. An interesting take on a classic style, the dark malts and clean yeast made this very close to a Schwarzbier (which I think it the most underrated beer style). This would be a great summer beer because it's satisfyingly dark, refreshing, and easy to drink. Pick it up if you see it on the shelf.
