Justin:
Aroma - Banana is the biggest thing that comes out with bubble gum as a close second and caramel bringing up the rear. No hops, just sweet malts and yeast. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - It's not quite clear and the color is a light amber with a fluffy, tightly bubbled off-white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - The yeast is all bubble gum and banana again in the flavor. It's got a subtle tartness to it which is welcome and helps break up the yeast character. The malts are caramel and there are some dark fruits sneaking in like plum and fig. The finish is a little dry but it makes the beer inviting. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is low and the body is medium+. It's quite creamy. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - Belgian Quads aren't really a beer that I sit down and sip on a random occasion. I prefer to pair them with food (desserts mostly) so it's hard for me to think about this one as a daily drinker. As it should be, it's a big beer with big flavor and big alcohol. It was a good example of the style and if you're looking for a delicious and affordable quad, you can't go wrong here. |

Blake:
Aroma - It's got the fruity esters you come to expect with Belgian yeast, mainly banana, clove, and raisins. There is also some nice hints of brown sugar and caramel from the malts. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Copper in color with a fluffy off-white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Caramel notes play great with the dark fruits of raisin and fig. Plenty of banana and clove from the yeast, and a bit of spice as well. Overall the flavor is quite sweet. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - Surprisingly full body for the style, and on the low end for carbonation. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - This was one of the early beers of Boulevard's Smokestack series and has a mainstay ever since. It's a great example of the style, and if you are a fan of Belgian beers you're likely to love this one. This isn't a style of beer I drink that much these days, but it's a good reminder of why I should rotate it into the beers I drink from time to time. |
