There's the backdoor. You're not allowed to leave through the front.
Justin:
Aroma - There's quite a bit of rye spiciness that smacks you in the face followed by some caramelly sweetness. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Huge head comprised of thick bubbles. A lot of floaters in it. Light amber to light brown. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - There's a lot of spiciness in the flavor from the rye. Not a heat spicy just a spiced flavor. There's quite a bit of booze but it's nothing outlandish, considering it's 12%. You can also get some caramel and some hop bitterness that is there to provide balance, not flavor. The malts are the real start of the show. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation with a medium body. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - This one had quite a bit going on with it so it's somewhat intense. I enjoyed it very much but I would choose this as one of my "9:00" beers. After the kids are in bed and you've had a long day at work and no chance to sit down since you've gotten home, this is the beer you'd crack open as you put your cheeks on the sofa. It's not something you can drink more than one of (it's a 750ml so it's like two beers already) but it'll take you a while to finish it. This will let some more flavor come out as it warms up. By the time you're done, you'll sleep like a baby. |

Blake:
Aroma - Lots of rye characteristics (which you'd expect from a beer called 'Rye-on-Rye'). Bit of vanilla and oak, presumably from the barrel aging. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Deep copper with off-white head. Floaties are very present, likely from bottle conditioning. |
Score: 2/3 |
Flavor - Tastes a bit like rye whiskey which has been cut with water, and a fair amount of brown sugar added. It's sweet and boozy, but not overwhelmingly so. The rye characteristics give it a nice spice flavor. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation, medium mouthfeel, and sweet finish. |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - I used one of my two bottles of this beer for this review, and might have to go pick up another one. This is the perfect type of beer to cellar and see how it changes with age. I have a feeling the beer will take a smoother character as it ages, and take away some of the boozy bite. Maybe we'll open up one from this year this time next year and let you know how it changed with age. |
