Justin:
Aroma - Right away you can pick out the spicy Belgian yeast then you get the oak and bourbon. Boozines has a nice presence and there's caramel from the malt. There's some good dark fruits (plum, raisin) coming through also. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - Huge thick head! Ruby brown in color. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Wow! It's definitely boozy which was expected. I'm also getting some back cherry and plum on top of the alcohol. It comes across as a little sweet but not overly so. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation, thin-medium body. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - When a beer style has the word "strong" in it you know what you're in for. This quad definitely lived up to expectations. While it isn't an everyday drinker, it is something that would be great to split with someone to celebrate a special occasion or maybe you can rip into one after a long day of work. Regardless of when or why you drink it, it won't disappoint. |

Blake:
Aroma - Caramel sweetness and fruits, mainly cherries, blend with a lot of bourbon and oak. Plenty of booze in the aroma, and a nice bit of spice from the Belgian yeast. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Amber in color with a dense white head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Smooth bourbon runs throughout this beer. Gives a lot oak, vanilla, and toffee. Cherry is subdued but there. Flavors intensify as the beer warms up. |
Score: 17/20 |
Mouthfeel - Medium body with medium carbonation. Sweet and boozy finish. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - I need to grab another bottle of this and age it. I've aged other years of this, and the sweetness dies down a bit and you get more of the underlying flavors. Regardless, it's a good beer no matter when you open it. Boulevard makes some phenomenal beers in their Smokestack series, and this is one they've been doing for a while. I make sure to pick it up every year. |
