I tell my kids "Because I said so," and then I hate myself.
Justin:
Aroma - The aging in red wine barrels is very apparent from the aroma. Big red wine notes mix with the tartness of the bacteria used to sour the beer. The brett in this one is more fruity than funky but it's definitely got a little of both. |
Score: 9/12 |
Appearance - The medium amber beer it crystal clear and comes with a densely bubbled tan cap of foam that stays perched on top of the beer the whole time you drink it. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Again, the wine is very present and the flavor is reminiscent of a sweet red while the beer actually finishes semi-dry. The funk from the yeast hits the back of your tongue as you swallow reminding you that this is still a beer. The beer is acidic (as it should be) but not overly so and the malts are hard to pick out but they are bread crust when you find them. |
Score: 16/20 |
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is medium+ and possibly even high and the body is medium. It's not out of balance because the sparkling nature of the beer helps cut the acidity and makes it rather enjoyable. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - In yesterday's review of Alpha's Papaya Brett, I talked about this being a good sour beer intro for wine drinkers. I repeat that sentiment for this beer as well. The flavors make the beer very approachable for a big spectrum of beer drinkers and non-beer drinkers for that matter. It's not something I could drink all night but I could have a couple before moving on. |
Score: 7/10 |
