Was that with Haim or Feldman?
In a special gift from the heavens above....it was both.
Justin:
Aroma |
The beer, while not smelling "fruity," does have definite fruit notes. It's made with peach, cranberries and orange zest so it only makes sense. The peaches are most upfront in my opinion with orange zest coming in second and cranberry right behind it. The malts are slightly biscuity and combined with the fruit, the overall aroma is sweet while not overpoweringly so. |
Appearance |
The beer pours a clear, golden orange with a soft white cap of foam. The head starts about a finger tall and then recedes to a ring around the edge of the beer and a spotty white film on top of it. As you take drinks, lacing is left behind on the walls of the glass. |
Flavor |
There's a lot going on here and it works damn well. For starters, there's a bit of tartness to the beer that I wasn't expecting and I believe it's from the cranberries. The fruit flavors are huge and this time, orange zest is bringing up the rear. It's got big cranberry and peach coming through in equal amounts and they leave little room for malt flavor. The aftertaste is that biting tartness while all the sweetness comes when the beer is on your tongue. You can taste just a smidgen of alcohol but it isn't off-putting so it's not a huge factor, it's just there. |
Mouthfeel |
The body is bigger than I expected at medium+ and the carbonation is medium+ to match it. The beer is soft on the palate and the carbonation keeps it dancing on your tongue. (see what I did there?) |
Overall Impression |
There are not many breweries out there that could pull of a beer that was inspired by the cocktail "Sex on the Beach." However, the two breweries involved in this one make amazing beers so there were no doubts this would be delicious. The tartness was unexpected but with all of the other fruit flavors in this one, it was absolutely refreshing. This could easily be a summer beer but at 8.0% it's sure to keep you warm while it's cold out. It's on shelves now so pick up a couple for NYE and get the part started. |
