Justin:
Aroma - Bitter, roasty, coffee, boozy sweetness. Chocolate as it warms up. |
Score: 10/12 |
Appearance - Black in color with a light brown thick, dense head. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Coffee is there but not overwhelming. Some booziness and roasty character is there but subtle and well balanced. Dark fruit character with notes of plum, prune and raisin. Very nice blend of flavors. |
Score: 18/20 |
Mouthfeel - There's low carbonation which allows for some nice creaminess. Thick but not verging on "chewy." |
Score: 3/5 |
Overall Impression - 2nd Shift is known for doing predominantly hoppy beers (and doing them quite well). However, over the last few years, they've spread their wings to do some amazing barrel-aged beers that beer geeks fawn over. With their beers only available on draft or in their signature 750ml bottles, you may not be able to find this exact beer any longer but snatch up their next batch when it comes out if you can. |

Blake:
Aroma - Coffee, dark chocolate, and roasted malts. Make a candle that smells like this and I'll buy it! |
Score: 11/12 |
Appearance - Dark as night with a deep tan head. Looks like motor oil, delicious, delicious motor oil. |
Score: 3/3 |
Flavor - Coffee, dark chocolate, and booze. A bit of sweetness for those who are worried the coffee flavor might produce too bitter of a flavor. |
Score: 18/20 |
Mouthfeel - Not completely as thick as it looks, but still enough mouthfeel to linger. |
Score: 4/5 |
Overall Impression - Regular LSD is great by itself, but 2nd Shift has been killing it with all the variations they do with this stout. I've not been lucky enough to get all the barrel-aged variations that have been hitting the market lately, but I can only assume those are just as good (most likely better). There aren't many brewers in the country right now that are as consistent in quality as 2nd Shift. I know when I buy one of their beers I can expect a quality brew. |
